There is a particular shade of turquoise that shows up in Tonalá pottery and almost nowhere else — somewhere between sea glass and a Jalisco sky. This pedestal bird bath is built around it, with fine white dotwork scattered across the surface like sand and bold floral medallions in coral, cobalt, and gold breaking through.

The turquoise does something in a garden that brighter multicolor pieces don't: it reads as calm against green, so it holds its own next to shrubs and beds without competing with your flowers. Set it where you already look — off a kitchen window, at a path bend, beside a bench.

Tonalá, just outside Guadalajara, has been a pottery town for centuries, and the dense hand-stippled detail work on this piece comes straight out of that tradition. Every bird bath is thrown and painted by hand. The bowls are shaped on a wheel rather than pressed in a mold, so rims can run slightly uneven and a piece may sit a little off-plumb. Glaze pools thicker in some places than others. None of that is damage — it's the fingerprint of the person who made it, and it's why no two of these are alike.
