About Engobe Pottery
Engobe is a centuries-old Mexican ceramic tradition where contrasting clay slips are layered and hand-painted before firing, creating the rich graphic patterns and contrast you see in this piece. It's a different tradition from Talavera — engobe pieces are characterized by their graphic black-and-white palettes, intricate floral negative-space patterns, and matte-to-satin finishes rather than the high-gloss tin-glazed surface of Talavera. Both are authentic Mexican folk art, but each comes from a distinct regional craft heritage.
Known in Mexico as cocido (fired) ceramic — this is a traditional technique where colored clay slips are hand-painted onto the piece and then fired into the surface.
Care
Glazed ceramic; wipe clean. We recommend bringing it inside or covering for hard freezes — like all ceramic pieces, prolonged freeze-thaw cycles can cause cracking.
